Re: Hating job
A classic Gen Y statement. This world owes you fuck all. My grandfather hated work as well. He lined up at the dock gates every day hoping he would get picked for a days work so he could feed his family. That is called opportunity. We as adults make conscious decisions to have children, have morgages, get married etc etc and are accountable for them, despite what your schooling teaches you. If we was all doing the work we loved we all be playing for West Ham or flying space ships around Mars. Toughen the fuck up and get on with it.

Re: Hating job
I think for many people the thing that eventually grinds you down is commuting.
This country must be unique in the extent and distances that people are prepared to commute for a job.

Can you imagine the French doing a 2 hour commute each way, or eating a rushed sandwich at their desks, filling their keyboard with food debris?

The final straw for me was watching people gather in little clusters along the platform because they all knew exactly where the carriage doors would be when the train stopped.

I took to watching where people preferred to sit and then deliberately sit in 'their' seat just to piss them off.

Every now and then the train operator would send a different type of train and there would be panic amongst the clusters as they didn't know where the doors would be.

Yes, worked in the City and hated it after a while. Not only the commuting but the sheer fact of what I was doing (programming for a data provider) but who I was doing it for (IB in the main).
I was in a different position in that, although have a kiddie and an ex wife to support, the mortgage was about to paid off. As soon as the mortgage was put to bed I resigned. Now work doing web programming and database things for a charity (local to me too), had to cop a huge pay drop but am so much happier now. No regrets at all.

Re: Hating job
Banjo, I believe you are referring to downsizing, trading down, consolidation or whatever the buzz word is these days. I couldn't agree more I have started to do this, but I think it can only work for the lucky one's that have something to downsize from in the first place.

I believe your partner would have to be singing from the same hymn sheet, which is not always the case. I also think that timing is key, if no dependent's, kids flown the nest etc. That's why many wait until retirement, or until the mortgage is paid off, as no responsibility.

Although could be too late then.

Re: Hating job
I worked for the same company for 28 years. I climbed the corporate ladder, travelled the world and earned excellent money. When I got to GM level I began to realize hat most of my colleagues and seniors were self interested, ego driven, greedy cunts. It took me about a year to reach this conclusion by which time I was quite depressed and another year to extricate myself as I was angling for a redundancy, which I got. That last year was OK as I had made the decision and it was now about maximizing my return and I ignored most of the silly corporate politics that were previously getting to me.

For the past six years I have run my own consulting business with just me plus my wife who does the book/admin. I couldn't be happier. I only need to work 4 days per month and can go on holiday whenever I choose. I do miss social/intellectual stimulation but I have sought to find this elsewhere.

It's not about the quantity in one's life but about the quality of ones life. There is a balance as we need to live and feed our families but how much do we not need and could we actually have better lives if we clearly identified what we do and don't need to lead a happy life.

Re: Hating job
Is your boss a miserly gentleman? that has nothing but contempt for his suffering subordinates?

Whilst at work, do you wear finger-less gloves? and do you warm your poor nubbs on a solitary glowing coal?

Have you an endearing crippled child? one that is full of love and wonder?

If so my dear fellow....

You're fucked!

Re: Hating job
Pretty much the same. Can't stand my job but unfortunately the little talent I have won't earn me any money and all the other jobs I can find seem just as bad as the one I have! Fortunate that I have no kids really which takes some pressure off!

Just got to the stage where I abhor working your bollocks off just to line the pockets of the blokes at the top.

My fault really, I should have done better at school !!

Re: Hating job
I can relate of sorts to Spandex Sidney's cracking posts. I have never had a job I liked in 40 years. Never earned as much as I should have for all the aggro, and time put in. Last 10 years ran my own business and the worst part was telling staff what to do over and over who couldn't use their own initiative and really couldn't give a fuck. I had to tell the staff that I had sold the premises on the last day and pay them in lieu as I knew the snakes would try and steal customers details, sure enough when they were leaving, I noticed a customer record book was missing so said to find it, no luck so told them to empty their bags and there it was.

Losing hair, got this rash on my scalp and spreading to my face from stress. Sold out to Vietnamese, they will make it work as they will just bring a load of their illegal people over on Student visas to learn at English school and work all hours, even though they are only aloud to work part-time. They just move on if caught and start again. Same applies with all the other nationalities, there is no level playing field. Was in the nick of time as would have gone under in another few months, it really was that close.

Will never employ another person, pay rent to a landlord, pay high business rates ever again. Going to work from home and will only rely on me, ahem.

Re: Hating job
I had the perfect job when I was running my sports shop unfortunately it didn't work out due to a few things mainly being young and naïve and thinking I'd made it after a year..

Now I do something totally different which I can't stand at the moment and it's probably the fact of having a mortgage etc that's keeping me staying

Really want to get back into the sports trade but just can't risk it

Re: Hating job
Buzzy mate, we've all been there. What helps is if you write down all the things that are getting you down with your current job and grade them 1 - 10. Then create a list of things you are looking for in a job and grade them 1 -10. Write down the absolute banal, like a shorter commute, the ability to walk out the door and go for lunch in a boozer, having a laugh with colleagues.

Strikes me with your accounting background you have a lot of options and could work for an accounting firm or on the client side.

Also, now would be a good time to do a few Psychometric tests to find out what kinds of things float your boat. Do you like people, are you tasked based. There is a book called "What Color is my Parachute" it's American but you should be able to order it online.

I never got one thanks for the weekends I gave up seeing my kids to work for them so I just put my coat on cos it was cold and walked out. Most of you lot are athiests, dont believe in another life after death and do not live this one. MAD
